Dr. Sidawy is professor and chairman of the Department of Surgery at The GW Medical Faculty Associates.  He is a Vascular Surgeon with special interest in the management of lower extremity diabetic vascular disease.  Dr. Sidawy finished his Vascular Surgery Fellowship at Boston University Hospital.  He also obtained a M.P.H degree in Health Care Administration from George Washington University.

He has been published in more than 115 peer-reviewed articles, authored or co-authored over 40 chapters and numerous abstracts, and made several national and international presentations; his publications span the clinical, research, and educational fields.  In addition, Dr. Sidawy currently serves as the Editor-in-Chief of the Journal of Vascular Surgery, the premier journal in the specialty ranking first among its peers in the United States and across the world.  He is also on the editorial boards of the Annals of Vascular Surgery, Vascular, and Perspectives in Vascular Surgery and Endovascular Therapy.

He has also edited two textbooks; the Basic Science of Vascular Disease published in 1997 and Diabetic Foot, Lower Extremity Arterial Disease, and Limb Salvage, which was published in 2006. He served as Associate Editor of the Rutherford’s book of Vascular Surgery, often called the bible of the specialty.

Dr. Sidawy recently concluded a six-year term as a Governor of the American College of Surgeons and a term as the president of the Society for Vascular Surgery, the largest Society in the specialty.  Currently, he is the president of the Vascular Disease Foundation, a multispecialty organization with a mission to improve the awareness of vascular disease and health and the umbrella organization of the PAD coalition and the Venous Disease coalition. Dr. Sidawy has held multiple positions such as a 14 year tenure as the chief of Surgery at the Washington DC VA Medical Center, membership to the Vascular Surgery Board of the American Board of Surgery, chair of the Distinguished Fellows Council of the Society for Vascular Surgery, and president of the Society for Clinical Vascular Surgery, the Eastern Vascular Society, the Chesapeake Vascular Society, the Metropolitan Washington Chapter of the American College of Surgeons, and the Washington Academy of Surgery.

Dr. Sidawy’s primary clinical interest is the management of diabetic lower extremity vascular disease.  He is also interested in Health Policy issues and has served on the Health Policy Committee of the Society for Vascular Surgery, as well as, the Surgical Quality Alliance and the Patient Safety and Quality Improvement Committee of the American College of Surgeons.

He is the recipient of a number of awards and honors, including his most recent, The LaSalle D. Lefall award for “outstanding contributions to the profession of surgery and to the entire metropolitan Washington community” from the Metropolitan Washington Chapter of the American College of Surgeons. In addition, the Chapter has named a lectureship after Dr. Sidawy for his over 20 years of service to the Chapter. Finally, the 2009 New York Vascular Surgery Fellows Competition Award was named after Dr. Sidawy.
