Robert S. Understein, CPA

Board Member

Bob has focused his 50-year career in financial and tax planning, equity placements (real estate and communication properties), commercial real estate financing, and commercial real estate advisory services.

His career began in 1963, working in a family owned business known as Understein and Associates. This company was a CPA and high-end financial and tax planning firm in the Greater Metro Washington D.C. area. (The firm’s clients were among the “Who’s Who” of business and political Washington DC in the late 60’s, 70’s and 80’s, including six members of the Senate, a Secretary of State, Secretary of Defense, and CEOs-Senior executives of some of the leading companies in the U.S.). The practice was sold at the end of the 1980’s and for the next almost 20 years, he worked with companies (both large and mid-sized) providing financial planning services as an interim CFO (including two years, CFO of a mid-sized public company), enabling them to manage and grow.

He recently joined CohnReznick after spending four years at McGladrey as a Manager of Business Development.

For the past three years, he has devoted much of his time to the Government Transformation Initiative (GTI), working with Dave Walker (former Controller General and CEO of Government Accountability Office) Barry Melancon (CEO of the AICPA), and Steve Goodrich (CEO of Center for Organizational Excellence and Vice Chair of the Association of Management Consultants).

GTI’s objective is to obtain Congressional legislation to establish a Board on Government Transformation to make recommendations to improve the economy, efficiency, and effectiveness, of Federal programs, and for other purposes.

When he is not engaged in the above undertakings, he devotes his time to the below NFP entities, “looking at real estate” (playing golf-enjoys an index of 6.0) and spending time with his seven grandchildren and their families and his wife Susan (just celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary).
