Timothy McCaffrey, PhD

Timothy A. McCaffrey, PhD, relocated his laboratory from the Cornell University Medical College in New York City to The George Washington University in 2001. At GW, he founded the Genomics Core Facility, which provides microarray services and other genomics support to the entire research faculty at GW. In the same year, he co-founded a new Master’s program in Genomics, Proteomics and Bioinformatics; he and his colleagues are currently constructing a highly innovate PhD in this rapidly expanding field.

Following the generous donation of Catherine Birch McCormick in 2004, Dr. McCaffrey was named director of the Catherine Birch McCormick Genomics Center (MGC) at GW and vice chair for Research and Administration in the Department of Biochemistry and Molecular Biology.

Throughout his career, Dr. McCaffrey has been involved in groundbreaking research, focused in three major areas: cardiovascular disease, genomics and stem cells. In 2001, he received a prestigious MERIT award from NIH for his work on vascular aging. He has developed several novel tools to study important problems, such as measuring cell proliferation and understanding microarray publications.

His recent work has used genomic-scale transcript profiling to identify genetic alterations in cells that contribute to an apoptosis-resistant phenotype. This research has direct translational implications for identifying new drug targets to treat cardiovascular disease as well as for creating new diagnostic tests for predicting people who are at risk of developing heart disease.

Dr. McCaffrey received his BA from St. Mary’s University and his Masters and Doctorate from Purdue University. He received post-doctoral training at Cornell University Medical College in New York City.
