Esma Akin, MD

Esma Akin, MD, is the director of the division of Nuclear Medicine in the Department of Radiology at The George Washington University Hospital. She also holds the title of Assistant Professor of Radiology at The George Washington University Medical Center. Her special interest are nuclear cardiology, oncological imaging and PET/CT as well as SPECT CT imaging involving neuroendocrine tumors and parathyroid adenomas.

Dr. Akin received her training in both diagnostic radiology and nuclear medicine at Georgetown University Hospital in Washington, DC and is board certified both specialties.    Dr. Akin is currently vice-president of the DC Metropolitan Radiological Society of North America. She has presented lectures and seminars both nationally and internationally on the topics of Nuclear Medicine and PET/CT and has special interest in PET imaging of breast cancer. She is actively involved in teaching seminars in both nuclear medicine PET/CT as well as nuclear cardiology and has published numerous articles on these topics. Dr. Akin continues to lecture at post-graduate courses of the American Roentgen Ray Society. She also has extensive clinical experience in thyroid cancer and manages the thyroid cancer therapy clinic at the George Washington University Hospital. Dr. Akin has received a teaching and research award.
