Overview

The George Washington University’s George Washington University Heart & Vascular Institute & McCormick Genomics Center are pleased to host a CME event, with the Personalized Medicine Coalition, an educational and advocacy organization, as our co-sponsor. Our keynote speaker is Dr. Ray Hershberger who will address “The Genetics of Dilated Cardiomyopathy: A Paradigm for Cardiovascular Genetic Medicine.”

The keynote address will then be followed by a more informal and interactive discussion with the keynote presenter and guest panelists. The program is open to attendees at no cost and offers CME credit. The keynote speech will be captured for the George Washington University Heart & Vascular Institute and McCormick Genomics Center web sites for wider distribution and expanded availability of the content.

“The Genetics of Dilated Cardiomyopathy: A Paradigm for Cardiovascular Genetic Medicine”

Dr. Ray Hershberger is Professor of Medicine at the University of Miami School of Medicine, Director of Heart Failure Services and former Professor and Director of Heart Failure Program at the University of Oregon Health Care Sciences Center.

The incidence of heart failure continues to increase despite the reduction of coronary artery disease mortality. Dr. Hershberger is a national expert on familial cardiomyopathy, a disease which accounts for approximately 35% of patients with idiopathic systolic heart failure. His keynote address will review the relationship of genetic mutations and dilated cardiomyopathy and the current state of genetic testing of systolic heart failure.

Learning Objectives

After Dr. Hershberger’s lecture, participants will:

  • Understand concepts of genetic medicine, genetic models of disease, the global scope of cardiovascular genetic disease across a variety of diagnoses, and how these now and in the future are applicable to the emerging practice of cardiovascular genetic medicine
